Co-creation of a Public Information Comic
Visual Inquiry is proud to present Pathways of Hope, a public information comic co-created with the recovery community, University of Glasgow medical students, and clinicians. The comic was developed through a series of conversation cafés hosted by Humanising Healthcare, where lived experience was shared, listened to and respected.
Nic captured these reflections through live graphic note-taking, which formed the foundation of the comic’s visual narrative. Working closely with Professor Andrea Williamson, Dr Lynsay Crawford and Humanising Healthcare, the sketches were refined and reviewed by participants to ensure accuracy, empathy and impact. The final illustrations were co-created by Nic and Oscar Dickson, whose digital artwork brings the comic’s stories to life with clarity and care.
Funded by the University of Glasgow Knowledge Exchange Fund, Pathways of Hope is now used in:
- Medical education to foster empathy and challenge stigma
- Recovery settings to validate lived experience
- Community outreach to spark dialogue and reduce stigma
“The fact that we, as people with lived experience, were at the forefront of its development makes it real, honest and powerful.” Steff Kerr, NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde
“This comic places dignity, empathy, and lived experience at the heart of education and public understanding.”
Allan Houston, Humanising Healthcare
